Take a closer look at the window of “adding a new campaign” as an example how similar it looks like AdWords Editor:

Baidu PPC Editor allows users to update campaign settings including campaign name, campaign status, daily budget, ad copy display option, day parting setting, geo-targeting, negative keywords, and IP address filtering.

According to my source at Baidu, the software was developed by AdSage, a software product and service company specialized in online advertising business based in Beijing. It requires .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.

Google this morning issued a statement regarding a “big decision” about Google China operation,

We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China.

Just minutes ago, a friend in China sent me a link that indicates Google.cn is no longer censored:

Chaoyang district court in Beijing ruled that Evercare (Chinese name: Yi Mei Er) and Baidu engaged in unfair competition and ordered them to pay over 130,000 yuan for damages to Shisanba Co.

Evercare beauty salon started paid search advertising on Baidu on August 15, 2007. Evercare started bidding on its competitor’s brand name “Shisanba” on April 17, 2009 and used “Shisanba” as headline of its PPC ad copy, which of course directs people whoever clicks on the ad to Evercare’s own website.

The court thinks Evercare bid on a well-known beauty salon’s brand name “Shisanba” and purposely misled visitors to its own websites, which constitutes unfair competition. And, Baidu helped the act and should share the liability.

I suggest you not bid on competitor keywords or use competitor’s brand in your ad copies. If you are doing both, you could be in trouble especially when your competitor is well known.

Baidu’s third-quarter earnings jumped 42% (Q3 revenue about USD 187.3 million; net profit about USD 72.2 million) as it continued to gain traction with its new Phoenix Nest online-marketing system. However, Baidu’s updated its revenue projection for Q4 to $180 million, well below the $205 million expected by Wall Street.

Q4 projection is not a surprise to me as Baidu is switching all customers to Phoenix Nest from Dec 1, 2009, which is similar to Google’s AdWords. Currently, about 70% of Baidu customers are using Phoenix Nest system professional edition while a classic edition exists which is Baidu’s old keyword bidding system. As the new phoenix nest system will separate sponsored search results from natural search results, it would no doubt affect its Q4 earnings.

A recent Chinese government report predicted that Baidu’s dominance over Google will continue to grow because Baidu is more popular among new Internet users in the country, who often come from rural areas.

Mobile search is rising and Baidu is working hard to develop new mobile services. Last week, it announced a search deal with local carrier China Unicom.
