The latest statistics from iResearch showed that China online video market reached 2.66 billion uuan (USD430 million) in Q3 2012, with the QoQ growth of 16.2% and YoY growth of 37.2%.

As the major part of online video revenue sources, the online video advertising market is 2.01 billion yuan (USD320 million) in Q3, with the QoQ growth of 21.6% and YoY growth of 49.7%. Smart TVs Gained Popularity in China

Following the global trend of smart TVs’ popularity, 40% of the TVs that shipped in China in Q2 were web-enabled. According to NPD’s October 2012 DisplaySearch “Quarterly Smart TV Shipment and Forecast Report”, “this was an increase from 26% of televisions shipped in Q2 2011”.

This increase is quite reasonable. Firstly, most TV users are spoiled netizens and are very tired of TV shows’ schedule. Secondly, online content are ready to meet the need of smart TV users. It seems that UGC could be transferred from online videos to TV series.

China’s Top 2 Video Portals YouKu and Tudou to Combine

Youku and Tudou, the two largest online video companies in China, announced that they have signed a definitive agreement for Tudou to combine with Youku in a 100% stock-for-stock transaction.

“When the strategic combination is complete, Tudou will retain its distinct brand identity and platform in Youku Tudou Inc., strengthening and complementing Youku’s video business. Youku Tudou Inc. would establish a clear and dominant leadership position in China’s online video sector and become one of the largest Internet properties in China. This transaction would also lead to improvement in the industry structure and the underlying economics of the online video sector in China,” said Victor Koo. “We expect to see significant synergies across a number of areas including leveraging licensed content over a larger user base and realizing efficiencies in bandwidth management and other common expenses.”

Rumor: Baidu to Acquire Tudou.com

There are rumors that Baidu is to acquire Tudou.com. According to a Securities Times reporter‘s source who’s close to Baidu senior management, Baidu has approached Tudou.com with two acquisition proposals.

One option is direct acquisition of Tudou.com by Baidu and Tudou will remain independent operation and focus on UGC and original production.  The other option is that Baidu increases its investment in Qiyi and Qiyi acquires and integrates Tudou.com.

According to iResearch’s data, by effective browsing time in the second quarter this year, YouKu, Tudou and Qiyi have market share of 39.3%, 20% and 17.2% respectively.

PPLive Received $250 Million Funding from Softbank

PPTV

PPLive CEO Tao Chuang posted on his Weibo that Softbank injected hundreds of millions of dollars, reported the Phoenix Technology News.

Tao Chuang said the financing of this amount is more than the total amount of public financing raised by Youku, “a the largest single funding of Chinese Internet company since the financial crisis.”

PPLive was founded in 2005 and its main product is PPTV, one of the most popular desktop client that streams online TV and on demand videos. PPLive official data show that, PPTV has been installed by over 200 million users, over 100 million monthly active users; and, the average viewing time per person per day is 2 hours and 30 minutes.
