Ctrip remained the leader in China’s online travel booking market in the second quarter with 41.8% market share by revenue according to Analysis International’s latest report.

iResearch’s Q1 data indicate the same amount of market share owned by Ctrip. eLong has shown strongest growth from 7.4% in Q1 to 13.2% in Q2.

100 Million Chinese Tourists Will Travel Outside China by 2020

WTO estimates that 100 million Chinese tourists will travel outside China by 2020; 4.6 million Chinese tourists are expected to visit Europe in 2012.

A recent Roland Berger survey confirms that outbound Chinese tourism is going to boom in Europe in the years to come. The figures for 2012 are already impressive. They expect 18 million Chinese tourists will travel abroad, of which, 4.6 million will visit Europe, with France alone accounting for 1.5 million travelers.

In 2010, 85% of the 2.3 million Chinese outbound tourists in Europe traveled to 4 countries (France, Italy, Germany and the UK); the vast majority of the packages to Europe include France. For the Chinese, Europe’s attractiveness is a result of three factors: the presence of outstanding landscapes and natural sites, the overall hospitality and atmosphere and the variety of cities and places to visit.

Europe will need to address some issues such as the language barrier and the complicated visa process to countries like France.

Total online travel market revenue reached 440 billion yuan (USD 70bln) in the first quarter of 2012 in China, 78% of which went to air tickets booking and 13.8% to hotel booking.

The total estimated revenue of China OTAs in Q1 was about 23%, down 0.5% from the previous quarter but up 20.4% on YoY growth. Ctrip not only dominates OTA market with over 41% market share by revenue but also tour package booking market with 38% market share (by revenue), followed by Taobao Trip (9.7%).

Taobao Trip Total Sales Exceeded 10 Billion Yuan in 2011

Taobao Trip, a section on Taobao.com dedicated to travel related products including air tickets, hotel booking, tour packages and etc, announced that their total transactions in 2011 exceeded 10 billion yuan (CNY 10.9 billion or USD 1.73 billion).

About 67% of total sales on Taobao Trip (CNY 7.3 billion or USD 1.16 billion) were air tickets in 2011; the highest single day air ticket sale was on Dec 21 with over 80 thousand tickets sold. The daily air tickets sales in China is about 700K with about 200K sold online, which means about 40% of total air ticket were sold on Taobao Trip.

Taobao Trip was launched in May 2010 selling domestic and international air tickets, hotels, tour packages, attraction tickets, cruise, car rental and daily deals.

Tourists Number Surged During National Day 2011

During the seven days of China’s National Day holidays, about 24.3 million tourists traveled to 119 national scenic attractions according to the National Tourism Administration. That was about 8.84% more compared to the same period of 2010.

The tickets sale at these tourists attractions during this period went up by 10.57% to 1.25 billion yuan (US$196 million), according to statistics released by the administration last Friday.

Both online and off-line retailers experienced increase in total sales during this holiday.
