China Mobile substantially leveraged its first-mover advantages in 4G services and accelerated the migration of customers to 4G network.
As of 30 September 2014, China Mobile customers reached 799 million, among which 40.95 million were 4G customers. Recently, it set the goal for 150 million 4G subscribers in 2015, which can be doubled from 2014. Further, the number is expected to exceed 300 million in 2016.
As of end of 2013, China Mobile announced to establish 500,000 4G base stations and develop 50 million 4G subscribers in 2014. Now the latest data shows China Mobile has completed its initial goal for 2014 and with such growth rate of 4G subscribers, the number will be over 70 million by end of 2014.
Starting from February 2014, China Mobile provided 4G service in China. There was only 1.3 million 4G subscribers in that month and then the number increased continuously in 8 months. In October 2014, 4G subscribers increased by 13.501 million from September. Besides, 4G traffic is increasing rapidly in China nowadays.
As of September 2014, the shipments of China 4G mobile phone (TD-LTE) were 87.14 million according to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It is estimated by professionals that, sales volume of China Mobile’s 4G mobile phone (TD-LTE) will be over 100 million by the end of 2014 with over 700 terminal models.
There were no 4G mobile phones with price around 1,000 yuan while now there are 400 types of such 4G mobile phones. With further development of 4G TD-LTE terminal device, 4G mobile phone’s price could be lower than 800 yuan or even 500 yuan.
