Tencent are ranked the most innovative company in China and 12th globally according to BCG‘s “2015 most innovative companies” survey. Xiaomi, who was ranked top in China and 35th globally in 2014, didn’t get on the list in 2015. Huawei ranked 45th globally this year.
Innovation has continued to grow in importance. 79% respondents ranked innovation as the top most priority or a top-three priority in their companies, with 4 percentage points higher compared to last year according to the survey. Tencent, Huawei, and Lenovo are the only three Chinese companies who made it to the list in 2015. Tencent ranked 12st globally this year compared to 47th in 2014.
Tencent, as one of the three China’s internet giants (often referred to as BAT: Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent), has shown innovaition in QQ, WeChat, Qzone, Tencent News, Tencent Video, Tencent Gaming and other products. MAUs of QQ reached 850 million and MAUs of WeChat 650 million as of September 2015. The market value of Tencent was estimated US$173 billion according to “Hurun Rich List 2015” by Hurun Research Institute. Neither of Alibaba and Baidu made it to this BCG top list for innovative companies in 2015.
Huawei, established in 1987, has been the largest smartphone vendor in China by shipments and the second-largest Android smartphone vendor in Europe according to Kantar. Xiaomi, the major competitor of Huawei in smartphone, has made many efforts on marketing. In comparison, Huawei has already spent several years in research and development. Huawei has established 17 research institutes in the US, India, Sweden, Russia and other regions to gain advanced technology and products.
29 companies in the list came from the US, 11 from Europe and 10 from Asia. Science and technology also continued to be considered as the underpinnings of innovation.
